Composition is composing. According to Katie Wood Ray there are two kinds of writing. Ray categorizes the two as writing to live and composition. I interpreted the two types of writing as internal and external writing. Composition being external writing. It is a form of writing that is not only for self benefit. Composition involves a process that is unique to each student but share similar focal points. The process begins with an idea spark. This idea transforms as the writer seeks to communicate with an initial purpose. An idea becomes a composition when it clearly fits a particular form of writing directed towards a specific audience to inform. In my opinion all composition writing informs because it is an extension of a message from a different perspective other than the individual reading the work is aware of. Ray makes a very bold and correct statement. "And we have to remember that while writing to support a learning life is important writing, it's also easy writing compared to writing to communicate ideas effectively" She spoke about the traditional reading response strategy done in many classrooms. Read, respond, and share should not be the only writing being done in the classroom. There must be a time students are required to write directly from their heart. This is how composition is composed into a master piece.
My interpretation of composition from Hicks viewpoint is that composition writing is best when it becomes a natural skill. Writing is the language of the world. It is how we can effectively communicate thoughts across all dimensions. In order to effectively teach composition the necessary time and setting/space must be provided.
